Moving Between Groups

New swimmers should expect to remain in the Development group for at least a year or two as they improve their swim fitness and technique. Generally speaking, swimmers are invited to move on to the Performance program or Competitive Focus program at the start of a new session. On rare occasions, however, coaches will recommend that a swimmer moves mid-session. This is most likely to happen with an older swimmer who is new to swim training but strong and physically capable.

If the coaches think that your child is ready to join the Performance or Competitive Focus program, you will receive an email from our Administrator prior to the start of the next registration period.

Usually, the swimmer and their family are given the following choice:

  • move on to a new program or

  • stay in the same program for one more session.

After that, swimmers will usually be required to move on to the next group—we need to keep kids progressing through the groups in order to allow for new swimmers to join the Development program.

Your swimmer will not be alone—in any given session, there will be multiple swimmers being asked to move on to the next group. The coaches fully understand the stress and anxiety that can accompany this kind of change and will do their best to transition the swimmers into the next group. We hope swimmers can view the change from a very positive perspective, and as a reward for their improvement.

If you have any concerns about this process, please feel free to chat to your child’s coaches.
